Firehouse 43
Development of a structure that holds an apparatus bay for fire trucks, housing the fire fighters, and engages with the community morphed a volume of program. The station required strict sizes to rooms and proximity as to make sure firefighters could get from one end of the facility to the other in under 45 seconds. The program for the fire station was distributed to make sure firefighters were on a single floor and able to reach the front, while the community rooms were placed on the second floor, so firefighters have a direct path. Along with circulation, I wanted to make sure there was strong surveillance. With the use of an elongated core, a person could see down the building from the offices to the apparatus bays.
In order to address the constant vehicle movement, I looked at this project like a train station with an enclosed canopy. With a large volume of space morphing to express both on the inside and out of the space. The front of the station has jagged edges, similar to a blazing fire. The back of the station has an a-frame structure to house the community center.
